Compared to Tribunals, a less formal disciplinary forum for medical practitioner as well as nurses and midwives are Professional Standards Committees. These Committees hear complaints concerning allegations of unsatisfactory professional conduct in relation to registered health practitioners. The Committees are established by the respective NSW Council.
For matters commenced after 1 July 2010, Committees comprise four members, one of whom must be legally qualified.
For matters that were referred to the Committee before 1 July 2010, only Professional Standards Committee hearings conducted by the Medical Council of NSW may be held in public. Persons attending a hearing must abide by any non-publications directions made by the Chair of the Committee and any hearing and/or media guidelines.
Information regarding upcoming hearings can be found on the website of the Medical Council of NSW. Please direct any inquiries to media@hccc.nsw.gov.au.
With the introduction of the National Registration Scheme for health practitioners, matters that the Commission refers to a Nursing and Midwifery Professional Standards Committee after 1 July 2010, will generally be in public. Decision of these hearings will generally be publicly available.
