The Health Care Complaints Commission recently prosecuted two complaints against Mr Graeme Schubert, a psychologist, before the NSW Psychologists Tribunal, relating to an alleged breach of professional boundaries towards a female patient during therapy.
The Commission claimed that the psychologist had inappropriately conducted himself during counselling sessions by allowing the patient to hug and kiss him, and that he failed to maintain professional boundaries when he disclosed personal information to his patient. The Commission also alleged that Mr Schubert had spoken inappropriately to the patient, failed to provide appropriate therapeutic services, and failed to refer the patient to another psychologist.
On 2 October 2009, the Tribunal found Mr Schubert guilty of professional misconduct. Mr Schubert was reprimanded and suspended from practising as a psychologist for a period of two months. After the suspension, Mr Schubert is required to adhere to a number of conditions imposed on his practice for a minimum period of three years.
