The Health Care Complaints Commission recently prosecuted a complaint against Dr Ross Haron, a general practitioner, before a Professional Standards Committee. The complaint concerned the care and treatment provided to a patient who came under Dr Haron’s care during her admission to Glenn Innes District Hospital.
Dr Haron failed to review his provisional diagnosis, and relevant notes in the medical records, which led to a failure to identify a bowel obstruction before the patient was discharged. The patient was later admitted to another hospital where she was diagnosed with bowel obstruction and underwent surgery.
In its decision of 29 October 2009, the Medical Professional Standards Committee found Dr Haron’s conduct fell significantly below the standard expected from a practitioner of his level of training and experience. The Committee ordered Dr Haron be cautioned.
