Strategies for resolution
A woman rang the Commission, concerned about her brother who had been hospitalised with serious leg injuries after a truck crash. The woman said that her brother was having problems with the nurses. It seemed they took a long time to respond to his requests for pain relief and assistance to get to the bathroom. This was very distressing for the brother who was traumatised by the accident and in a lot of pain and discomfort.
The woman wanted to know what she could do to help her brother. The Commission’s Inquiry Officer suggested options for how the brother’s concerns could be addressed directly by talking to the Nurse Unit Manager, the Director of Nursing or the hospital’s patient representative. The woman said that she would speak with her brother about the best approach to take.
