Annual Report 2013-14 tabled in Parliament

The Commission’s annual report for 2013-14 was tabled in both houses of Parliament on 20 November 2014. Electronic copies of the report are now publicly available on this website.

This is the final annual report released under Commissioner Kieran Pehm, which includes a review of his time as Commissioner of the Health Care Complaints Commission since July 2005.

In the 2013-14 year specifically, the number of complaints to the Commission continued increased in line with the trend experienced over the past years. The Commission continued to strive for a timely and professional handling of complaints in the public interest and to continuously improve the service it offers to the public.

The Commission has also worked closely with health providers, regulation bodies, researchers and other relevant bodies in the health system to use the lessons learned from complaints and its own expertise in complaint-handling procedures to improve the delivery of health care services and associated policies, processes and structures.

In the past year, the Commission has used its powers to issue public warnings about unsafe health services on two occasions and, for the first time, prosecuted an unregistered health practitioner for the breach of a Commission prohibition order.
