Joint Parliamentary Committee review of Commission’s Annual Report 2008-09

The Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Health Care Complaints Commission has published its report about the Commission’s Annual Report 2008-09.
The Committee’s report summarises its review of the annual report, and also includes the Commission’s responses to questions on notice and the transcript of a public hearing that was held at Parliament House on 19 April 2010.
In the foreword to the report, the Chair says: ‘Overall, the Committee was pleased to note a concerted effort at both improving the provision of services by the Commission and ensuring that the Commission’s services are widely known and utilised.’
The Committee comments on several legislative changes in 2008-09 that broadened the powers of the Commission in assessing, investigating and prosecuting complaints. The Committee anticipates that these changes will have a positive impact on the Commission’s future performance.
The Committee is currently conducting an Inquiry into the operation of the Health Care Complaints Act, and will report to the Parliament on its findings shortly.
