Mr David McAlpine – Paramedic – Registration cancelled and prohibition order made for unsatisfactory professional conduct and professional misconduct

18 August 2022

The Health Care Complaints Commission prosecuted a complaint against paramedic, Mr David McAlpine, before the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (‘the Tribunal’).

It was alleged that on 7 April 2020, while working as a paramedic for NSW Ambulance, Mr McAlpine:

  • conducted an ECG in an improper way and made inappropriate comments to a patient
  • conducted an inappropriate abdominal examination on the patient and inappropriately placed her hand on his body
  • asked the patient inappropriate questions and had inappropriate discussions with her.

In its decision of 17 August 2022, the Tribunal found the complaint proven. The Tribunal found that Mr David McAlpine was guilty of unsatisfactory professional conduct and professional misconduct.

The Tribunal ordered that Mr McAlpine’s registration be cancelled with a non-review period of 12 months and made a prohibition order preventing him from providing ambulance services for 12 months.
